I have 15 heads of garlic. What should I do with them?

Mmm, garlic.

If it were me, I would roast a couple of them, but a couple loaves of bread and some goat cheese, and invite friends over. One head of garlic per person makes a nice light meal.

Darn it, you beat me to it!

Seconded on the roasted, bread, & goat cheese.

Hey, we were discussing gaming this Sunday night, weren't we, Vy?

Indeed. I can roast a bunch of garlic on Sunday. I wonder if Michele would like Arkham Horror...

I'm not sure it'd be so good without the goat cheese, but maybe! No dairy for me. And Shannon likes garlic, but large quantities are an issue. For me, after he eats it. If you know what I mean. And I think you do. :)

IIRC, roasting helps with that problem significantly.
But I am not always known for RC.

Though from later discussion, I may have misinterpreted the problem. Sorry to get your hopes up. :(

I'm told that's why people in love are supposed to eat garlic *together* :)

Unless we redefine the word "pore." Very loosely.

I third the roasting. You could combine it with white beans or hummus or whatever creamyish thing you can tolerate these days.

[info]vylar_kaftan

Hmm! Hummus is okay sometimes. I might try that!

Ooh, yes, hummus!

Anything, really, to offset the "garlic, garlic, and nothing else" aspect of the meal. Roasted red peppers, cold cuts, crudites...

Mm, I love red peppers. That's a good idea!

We have switched to a large Terra Firma box, in an attempt to eat more fresh local foods and less packaged things. This is requiring a LOT of cooking. And the garlic just keeps coming...

Learn to Juggle?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]vylar_kaftan

I can only contact-juggle, and that not very well.

I had very poor eyesight as a kid and I somehow missed the skill that tells me where objects are if I'm not touching them. I'm very nervous in any sport with a ball smaller than a basketball.

But I'm good at anything touching my body, which is why I was a natural for contact juggling. Maybe someday I will develop that skill so I can perform party tricks...

Back when I worked at a magic shop I got pretty good at Contact Juggling. Tried it a few months, ago, though, and I could barely get a Windshield Wiper or a Butterfly going. :) It's cool that you're good at it. It's mesmerizing to watch, even when you know how it works.

You're thinking of Diablos. I'm talking about contact juggling, like the Goblin King does in Labyrinth.

I believe we're talking about the same thing.

Just in case, this is what I'm talking about (YouTube) (this is NOT me, I suck) :)
0:42-1:17 is a Windshield Wiper
1:24-1:42 is a Butterfly

At least that's what they called them a few years ago, when I was trying to learn. And a lot of groups have their own unique terminology. Sorry if my jargon is out of date/style.

Hey, you're right. And those are the only two tricks I can sort of do. I had no idea they had names! How weird, because there is also a "butterfly" for Diablos (I think) and I assumed the other trick was one I didn't know. Sorry!

No need to apologize :) I'm confused most of the time. It's a state of being with me.

What's Diablos? Fire juggling or something?

No idea if you're a vegetarian ... but you can roast a chicken stuffed with garlic (only 15 cloves though) http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Garlic-Roasted-Chicken-and-Vegetables/Detail.aspx

I've made chicken with 40 cloves. Hmm, I could get a turkey and stuff it. They're bigger. Good idea! Although I think some of them are about to get roasted on Sunday... but I'll still have plenty.

Roasted garlic is also very good with roasted beets, which are not quite in season yet, but will be soon. Throw in some carrots for variety if you want. Walnuts or pecans are good with roasted garlic, if you can do nuts. Lettuce, celery, other crunchy greens are improved by roasted garlic.

In fact, just about anything that isn't too sweet is improved by roasted garlic. Okay, maybe not breakfast, but just about anything else.

I got some beets in the produce box and I had no plans for them. I didn't know you could roast them. I'll have to try that. Nuts are still out, but I can handle almost any vegetable or fruit now.

Chard with garlic:
1 bunch of swiss chard, chopped
1/4 c butter (could probably substitute)
1 head garlic, chopped
salt, to taste (chard is fairly salty already)

Saute until reasonably soft. Irresistibly yummy.

Or:

Garlic soup base:
1 head garlic, cloves halved
olive oil
3 c water

Heat garlic in oil over low until soft (not brown). Add water, simmer for ~30mins until very tender. Salt and pepper (and other spices) to taste. Scales up easily.

I think I can't digest that much oil in one dish, even if I used olive oil, but maybe I could do it with chicken broth...

I suspect if you substituted olive oil for the butter, you could use significantly less (in fact, I could probably use less butter, but mmm, butter). :) I've also heard bacon instead, if you do meat. I'm planning to experiment more over the summer.

I don't eat mammals, but if I could do it with less oil perhaps that would work. I wonder if spinach is good that way.

Garlic soup!

(there are many garlic soup recipes on teh intarweb, many of them good and you can always work around any dietary restrictions with a little imagination)

Garlic soups have the same benefits as roasted garlic as far as relative mildness, AND they're soup!
