Frustrated

Originally published at Vylar Kaftan. You can comment here or there.

When I think about my goals and priorities for the coming weeks and months, I keep getting distracted by all the things I “should” have been doing for the past six months. I feel like I’m buried under an impossible mountain of to-do lists. One thing at a time, I know–but it just seems like I can never do all of this.

Also, I have trouble with unrealistic expectations. :(

One problem I’m having is that my physical environment is stressing me out. I’m a neat freak and this apartment has gotten out of control. The office is literally piled with junk. I cannot walk in there safely, nor reach shelves. I’m good at cleaning and organizing, but I dislike huge chores like this (I’m a “clean as you go” kind of person.) I don’t currently have the flexibility and stamina necessary to handle this.

At least the office door can stay closed.

What do you guys think? Try to do little cleaning tasks in the other rooms, and keep the office closed until I’m ready for it? Attack the office with Shannon’s help and confront some clutter that’s been there for years? I can’t decide which would help more–all the little cleaning/organizing tasks that are bugging me in the rooms I use most, or the awful nightmare of the office.

(As a side note, the reason I recognized what was happening here is that Shannon scrubbed, vacuumed, mopped, and dusted before I got home from the retreat… and it was fabulous. I felt much better about being in this environment. Have I mentioned that I love this man?)

Do you write in your office? Because you need good writing space, and that should be the first priority.

I have similar issues -- right down the line.

IMX, it's a lot easier to tackle the big jobs with someone else's help. Just having someone there to help you go through things, or to talk with you while you do, is encouraging. And if you have stuff you can't bear to go through, someone else can usually sort it more easily.

Now, I have a terrible time accepting such help. I've made dates with people I trust to help me, and I almost always find ways to cancel them. I am trying very hard not to let shame cripple me. And I am slowly chipping away at things myself. But I've been here almost 2 years, and there are still packed boxes in every room but the bathroom. Sigh.

I don't write in the office... but my desk is a wreck too. Probably that's where I should start.

Any interest in trading time? An afternoon here, an afternoon at your place... see what we can get through.

How does Tuesday sound? Me at your place? (I'll need directions.)

I will have to see what my schedule looks like. But maybe! Let me get back to you tomorrow?

Can I borrow him?

Yes! I share. He's powered by chicken wings, so make sure you have some handy.

Too bad airfare is prohibitive. My spouse could use help in the basement. (Well, actually, the whole house, but the basement is mostly his domain and my pain.)

Well, the basement might be a bit musty for my allergies, but yes, it's too far anyway. :)

Oh, you meant my husband. *sniff* I thought you wanted me!

If you give him enough BBQ chicken wings, he might flap his arms and start to fly.

I think I'd go for "Try to do little cleaning tasks in the other rooms, and keep the office closed until I’m ready for it." Since you CAN close the office door, and make it not your problem until you're happier with the rest of your living space. When you get the other stuff is not overwhelming (even if it's not done), add in "Spend 30 minutes [or whatever] a day on the office." For me it can be freeing when my goal is "make progress" rather than "finish this impossible task." Of course, if you're the kind of person who would rather attack the office all at once rather than in bits, then by all means enlist Shannon's help and go for it. I'd still do the other stuff first.

I think that's wise advice. I spent 10 minutes (ONLY TEN MINUTES, sheesh) and the kitchen counter already makes me happier. Just little things. The table is clear again, which helps a lot.

Good idea!

Getting rid of stuff is extremely liberating. Remember: if it's been in a box for a year, you don't need it.

But this isn't true for me. I have writing from childhood and things like that.
